Borussia Dortmund host Zenit St. Petersburg in must win game: Champions League Preview
By Tushar Bahl
Previous Meeting: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Zenit (BVB won 5-4 on aggregate)
The last time Borussia Dortmund and Zenit St. Petersburg faced off was in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in the 2013/14 season. The Black and Yellows won the first leg in Russia 4-2, thanks to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski (x2).
The second leg was a much tighter affair, and Zenit nearly overcame their deficit. Hulk’s long range effort gave them the early lead on the night at the Westfalenstadion, before Sebastian Kehl equalised for Dortmund. Salomón Rondón then headed Zenit back in front in the second half, but they were unable to complete the comeback, and Dortmund secured qualification to the last eight.
Axel Witsel played 90 minutes for Zenit in both legs, and nearly brought them level on aggregate late in the second leg. But he was unable to prevent the Russian giants from getting eliminated by his current employers.
