Borussia Dortmund opened their UEFA Champions League account with a 2-0 win over Zenit St. Petersburg thanks to second half goals from Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland.

In a game that was very much like the one we saw at the weekend against Schalke, Borussia Dortmund dominated possession and were camped in the Zenit half for the majority of the game. The Russians were happy to sit back and defend, leaving the Black and Yellows with very little space to exploit and forcing a goalless first half.

Borussia Dortmund had to wait until the 78th minute to get their breakthrough, and it arrived through a spot-kick from Jadon Sancho after Thorgan Hazard was fouled inside the box. Erling Haaland then sealed the win in stoppage time after being played through by a clever flick-on by Jude Bellingham.

Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from their 2-0 win over Zenit.

Roman Bürki (5/10)

Bürki didn’t have any saves to make today. So it seemed like he was intent on making things difficult for himself and the team. The 29 year old had several sloppy moments that could have easily cost the team on another day.
