Mats Hummels is a doubt for Borussia Dortmund’s upcoming games against Club Brugge and Bayern Munich after going off with a hamstring injury in the win over Arminia Bielefeld.

Hummels scored a brace to lead Borussia Dortmund to an impressive 2-0 win against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday. However, the 31 year old had to be subbed off after suffering what appeared to be a hamstring injury just before the final whistle.

Ruhr Nachrichten report that even though the club did not want to reveal an exact diagnosis of Hummels’ injury on Sunday, there are many indications that he will not be available at least for Wednesday’s Champions League group stage game against Club Brugge. The local newspaper adds that those in charge at Borussia Dortmund will not take any risks with the health of the centre-back, as they simply cannot afford to lose him to a long term injury.

Sporting director Michael Zorc is quoted as saying, “in the end the doctors have to make the decision together with him.”

Hummels has been ever-present in the heart of Borussia Dortmund’s defence so far this season, starting all ten of their games in all competitions. The 2014 World Cup winner has been effective on both ends of the pitch, and also has three goals to his name.

Being without Hummels for this weekend’s topspiel against Bayern Munich would certainly be a big blow for Borussia Dortmund, especially with Dan Axel Zagadou already out with a knee injury. Emre Can is also in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, and it remains to be seen when he will be back.
