Borussia Dortmund II continue excellent start to the season; beat Preußen Münster 2-0

Enrico Maaßen’s Borussia Dortmund U-23s continued their stunning start to the new season, beating fellow promotion contenders Preußen Münster 2-0.

Tuesday’s clash between Borussia Dortmund II and Preußen Münster pitted first vs third in the Regionalliga West standings. And it was the table topping Black and Yellows who got the three points to make it eight wins and two draws from their opening ten games.

Dortmund U-23s were missing Tobias Raschl and Ansgar Knauff, who made the trip to Belgium with the senior team for the Champions League game against Club Brugge. In came Marco Hober, and the midfielder played a key role in the opener, playing Alaa Bakir through on goal in just the fifth minute of the game. The 19 year old lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 for Enrico Maaßen’s side.

Midfielder Franz Pfanne then doubled Borussia Dortmund’s advantage just before half time, finding the top corner after Alaa Bakir found him on the edge of the box.

Preußen Münster pushed more men forward in the second half as they searched for a way back into the game. But the Borussia Dortmund II defence, led by goalkeeper Stefan Drljaca, showed great resolve to hold firm and seal the 2-0 win.

The impressive win helped Borussia Dortmund U-23s extend their lead at the top of the Regionalliga West table to four points. Head coach Enrico Maaßen was delighted that his players were able to overcome the “character test” and continue their push for promotion to the third division of German football.
