Missed chances cost Borussia Dortmund

Seems like it is too often the case, but Borussia Dortmund had their chances to get something out of this game. They outshot Bayern 15-14, with five of them on target. The small amount on target does not tell the full story, with Dortmund’s best chances going off the mark. Dortmund’s xG of 2.46 was comfortably higher than Bayern’s 1.37.

The missed chances started early in the game. Haaland and Gio Reyna had a two on two on the counter attack. Reyna eventually found Haaland in behind, but his shot was skewed wide harmlessly.

Moments before the opener, Axel Witsel had an open volley at the back post. Opting to take it with the side of his foot, his effort went high and wide. Considering Reus’ goal came soon after, it was a forgettable miss. But it was a chance the Belgian international would have scored off 12 months ago.

At the beginning of the half was the Erling Haaland overplayed pass to Reus. No need to go through the play again, but this was one of Dortmund’s better chances of the game. A slightly better connection from Haaland, and Reus would have had a tap-in.

Down 2-1, a mistake from Bouna Sarr gave Gio Reyna a chance to run freely into the box. With Jerome Boateng in his way, Reyna went for the shot between the defenders legs. While he got it through, the shot was going to need a lot more power to get past Manuel Neuer. It was a tight space, but Reyna was way too slow to react to Sarr’s error, and by the time he took his shot, there was no chance of scoring.

Reus and Thorgan Hazard had chances of their own go to waste after. After linking up with Jude Bellingham, Reus cut past Boateng and sent his shot straight at Neuer. Right after, Hazard was on the end of Thomas Meunier’s cut back, but after teeing up a volley for himself, he could not give Neuer any problems with the shot.

In what was Dortmund’s final and possibly best opportunity, Raphaël Guerreiro’s cross left Reus with a golden opportunity to level the scores at 3-3. The ball was just over Haaland, but dipped perfectly for Reus to attempt a left footed volley. The captain opted to go for power with the finish, and saw his effort blaze over the bar. Looking back, he will feel that he had more time than he realised, and he could have easily taken another touch.
