Germany head coach Joachim Löw has reiterated that he has no plans to recall Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels despite his impressive form over the last 18 months.

Mats Hummels was told that he would no longer be considered for selection by Germany head coach Joachim Löw in March 2019, along with Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng. Löw said that the decision to drop the Borussia Dortmund vice-captain and the Bayern Munich duo was made as part of a national team upheaval in order to give younger players a better chance in the side. And now he has ruled out a potential return to the national team for the experienced trio.

"Speaking to Kicker, Löw said: “We have decided not to nominate these players, and nothing has changed in this regard. We cannot undo this now.”“They are great players with class. If a completely new situation arises for us next year due to the failure of key players, I will evaluate accordingly and consider alternative scenarios.”"

Since Löw’s decision to drop Mats Hummels, the centre-back has been one of the Bundesliga’s best performers. He moved to Borussia Dortmund before the start of last season and is now a vital player for the Black and Yellows. Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng have enjoyed a similar resurgence, and both played a key role in Bayern’s treble winning campaign last season.

On the other hand, Germany have struggled since the trio were dropped and their results over the last 18 months make for a rather grim reading.

Multiple former players and media pundits have urged Löw to reconsider his decision and recall the trio, who helped Germany win the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans Joachim Watzke and Bayern Munich boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge both said last week that they would like to see Hummels and Müller brought back into the Germany set-up for the upcoming European championships.
