Borussia Dortmund internationals: Gio Reyna, Jude Bellingham make national team debuts
By Tushar Bahl
It was a memorable night for Borussia Dortmund youngsters Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham, as they made their senior debuts for the United States and England respectively.
With the United States playing in their first game since February, Gio Reyna was named in the starting XI for their friendly against Wales on Thursday evening. The Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder became the 13th youngest player to ever play for the USMNT, just a day before his 18th birthday.
While Reyna wasn’t able to celebrate his debut with a goal, it was an encouraging performance by the youthful United States team as they were held to a goalless draw by Wales. Reyna has agreed to a four year contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, with the official announcement set to take place soon.
Jadon Sancho played 90 minutes for England, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland. Sancho also scored the Three Lions’ second goal with a fine curling effort after cutting in from the left flank. The 20 year old looked dangerous and caused the Ireland defenders quite a few problems.
But the game will be most remembered for the debut of Jude Bellingham, who became the third youngest player to represent the England national team, after Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott. The 17 year old came on in the 73rd minute and put in a solid shift for his country.
Felix Passlack was also in action on Thursday, as he helped Germany U-21s earn a 1-1 draw against Slovenia. Meanwhile, Nico Schulz has been sent back to Borussia Dortmund after coming off the bench in Germany’s win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
