Borussia Dortmund internationals: Gio Reyna scores first United States goal
Gio Reyna scored his maiden goal for the United States national team in their 6-2 friendly win over Panama on Monday.
Gio Reyna continues his upward trajectory, this time it’s with the United States national team. The Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder has been very impressive this season and it was only a matter of time before he started to make his mark on the international scene. It didn’t take Reyna very long to score his first national team goal, as he was on target for the USMNT in only his second appearance.
The United States dispatched Panama with relative ease but they didn’t get off to the best of starts, going down 1-0 in just the 8th minute. But Reyna dispelled any fears of an upset very quickly. After being awarded a free-kick just outside the box in the 18th minute, Gio Reyna hit a low curling drive into the corner past the Panama keeper.
With the goal, Reyna became the third youngest goal scorer in United States history, quite the feat for someone who just turned 18 years old. Reyna’s goal seemed to spur the USMNT forward as they quickly raced to a 3-1 lead, with the Borussia Dortmund man getting an assist for the second goal as well.
Reyna’s ascension with club and country is only just starting and with plenty of playing time and chances ahead for him. Fans of both Borussia Dortmund and the US National team will certainly be excited to see how he develops.
Reyna will now head back to Dortmund to start preparing for the packed fixture list that awaits the Black and Yellows, starting with the game against Hertha Berlin this weekend.
