Germany experienced a new low on Tuesday in their 6-0 defeat to Spain as Borussia Dortmund duo Julian Brandt and Mahmoud Dahoud were both left on the bench.
It was another night to forget for Joachim Löw and the Germany national team, as they were thrashed 6-0 by Spain in the final matchday of the UEFA Nations League group stage. Needing just a draw to qualify for the finals, Germany were carved open time and time again by the rampant Spain attack, who scored three goals either side of half time with Ferran Torres netting a hat-trick. The defeat to Spain was Germany’s heaviest since their 6-0 loss to Austria in 1931.
Borussia Dortmund duo Julian Brandt and Mahmoud Dahoud watched the entire thrashing from the bench, as Joachim Löw deciding against using them.
Manuel Akanji is returning to Dortmund slightly earlier after Switzerland’s scheduled UEFA Nations League clash against Ukraine was called off as a number of Ukraine players tested positive for COVID-19, and the local health authorities decided to cancel the game.
Elsewhere, Reinier Jesus experienced defeat with Brazil U-23s, as they were beaten 2-1 by Egypt. The on-loan Borussia Dortmund forward played nearly 70 minutes in Cairo, before being subbed off. He now faces a long trip back to Dortmund.
Felix Passlack was an unused substitute but had reasons to celebrate as the Germany U-21s beat Wales 2-1 and qualified for the U-21s European Championship, which begins during the next international break in March.
Three more Borussia Dortmund players could be in for England and Denmark action on Wednesday, as the final international break of the calendar year comes to an end.
