Borussia Dortmund have had their 3rd positive COVID-19 test of the season with Reinier Jesus testing positive on Monday before their Champions League game.

Borussia Dortmund announced on Monday that Reinier Jesus has returned a positive test for COVID-19. After both Manuel Akanji and Emre Can tested positive earlier this season, Reinier Jesus will now have to isolate and quarantine for two weeks separate from the squad. Reinier returned from international duty last week after traveling to Egypt with the Brazil U23s.

Reinier was not part of the squad over the weekend in the game against Hertha Berlin but did train with the team on Sunday. Reinier tested positive in the routine preparation for the Champions League, where all players are subject to Coronavirus tests before games.

Reinier hasn’t quite made the impact so far this season that he, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid frankly would have hoped. Madrid thought they were sending out one of their brightest youngsters to follow in the path of Achraf Hakimi and turn into a budding star. That hasn’t been the case so far though, with Reinier finding playing time scarce which is only going to get harder in the future. Missing two weeks of training and game time could result in Youssoufa Moukoko solidifying himself as Erling Haaland’s back up striker, leaving Reinier further down the pecking order.

Although Dortmund have a reputation for turning youngsters into stars, it’s not automatic. Reinier hasn’t had the best of starts to life in Germany. But let’s hope that he recovers quickly from COVID-19, and we get to see him back in action soon.
