Jadon Sancho: We can win the Bundesliga title if we keep playing like this
Borussia Dortmund beat Club Brugge 3-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, moving up to nine points after four matches in the group stage.
Borussia Dortmund have all but clinched their way into the Round of 16 of the Champions League, needing only one more point from their final two games to make it official. It was an impressive performance from the Black and Yellows who left little doubt on the pitch that they were the better team. Erling Haaland was once again among the goal scorers, scoring a brace in this one. Jadon Sancho also found the net, curling an inch perfect free kick into the back of the net from just outside the 18 yard box.
All of the Borussia Dortmund players and staff were very positive after the game, with strong words about the current feeling in the team and the weeks ahead. Jadon Sancho scored a perfect free-kick on Tuesday and was clearly happy with the result.
"“It was a fantastic goal. I have practiced many free kicks in extra sessions lately. And so I am very happy that it came off against Bruges. I have coaches and teammates that believe in me. Recently it’s been a hard situation for me. But its about how I come back and hopefully get back to the top like I was playing before.”“Erling Haaland is a fantastic player. I’m just happy I can get easy assists with him. He recently won the Golden Boy award, I’m very happy for him because he deserves it – he works hard on and off the pitch.”"
Sancho is no stranger to his recent performances and seems well aware he hasn’t been at the level Borussia Dortmund fans have grown accustom to. The goal today was a step in the right direction for the still young Englishman who will definitely be higher on confidence after such a beautiful strike. The 20 year old also spoke about Borussia Dortmund’s chances of winning the league title this season.
"“I hope that we can win a title. I want to think from game to game and not look too far into the future: But if we have performances like this week in week out, I am sure we can compete for the league title.”"
Sancho wasn’t the only player happy about the result, Mats Hummels was also delighted, and praised the two goalscorers.
"“The result was perfect for us. Erling is one of those players who always want to win, putting the pedal to the metal every second of the game, putting pressure on the opponent and scoring goals. That is why he is already as good as he is.”“The goal does Jadon Sancho a lot of good. He has rewarded himself for his efforts against Brugge. He worked a lot for the team and got into many promising situations. He will become even better in the coming weeks. When the others see that the artists are working on the pitch, the spark ignites and everyone steps on the gas. That’s what I keep trying to convey to these guys that they can radiate very, very strongly on the pitch.”"
It wasn’t just the players who had strong comments as both Lucien Favre and Sebastian Kehl added their thoughts on the win. Sebastian Kehl spoke about the current state of the squad and the importance of a strong finish to 2020.
"“That was an extremely important result today and that’s why we’re so happy. The atmosphere is good because we are getting good results. We want to go on a real run now and have a lot of work to do until Christmas. We have to stay focused and work on the things we can improve. We can still achieve a lot with this team.”"
Kehl also spoke about Jadon Sancho’s goal and how a strike like that can help his confidence in future games. The Borussia Dortmund head of licensed players department also praised Erling Haaland.
"“A goal is always good for an attacking player – and if it’s a nice one, then all the better. Goals always inspire and Jadon Sancho is a great player. He will get even better. Erling Haaland is extremely important to us, we don’t want to substitute him at the moment. He is fit and can play every three days.”"
One thing of note from Borussia Dortmund’s win against Brugge is that Lucien Favre chose to not bring on Youssoufa Moukoko even though the game was wrapped up, in what would have also made him the youngest player to ever feature in the Champions League. Perhaps Favre thought it might be too much too soon for the 16 year old after just becoming the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga. Moukoko will have two more chances to break the record before the Group Stage is done.
