Borussia Dortmund II suffered their first defeat of the season on Wednesday evening, losing 2-1 to SV Rödinghausen.

With ten wins and two draws from their opening 12 games, Borussia Dortmund II went into their game against SV Rödinghausen aiming to continue their push for promotion to the third division of German football. But their title charge suffered a blow on Wednesday, as SV Rödinghausen handed Enrico Maaßen and his side their first defeat of the season.

The Black and Yellows did not start as well as they would liked and fell behind in the 24th minute. And it was former Borussia Dortmund youth team player Yassin Ibrahim, who gave SV Rödinghausen the lead.

Borussia Dortmund had a number of chances in the first half to get back on level terms. And when they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, head coach Enrico Maaßen would have thought that his side would be going into the break on level terms. But Taylan Duman had his penalty saved as Dortmund’s frustrations continued.

Fresh after signing a new three year contract with Borussia Dortmund, Ansgar Knauff came close to finding the equaliser right after the start of the second half. But his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Alexander Sebald.

Borussia Dortmund II continued to search for an equaliser, but Rödinghausen hit them on the counter attack and made it 2-0 at the hour mark, with Yassin Ibrahim once again getting the better of Stefan Drljaca.

Steffen Tigges pulled a goal back for the BVB U23s with six minutes remaining, but Rödinghausen held on to claim a narrow 2-1 win.

The defeat means that Borussia Dortmund II are now five points behind league leaders RW Essen in the Regionalliga West standings, although they do have two games in hand. Next up for the U23s is a trip to 19th placed SC Bergisch Gladbach on Sunday.
