Lucien Favre and Michael Zorc pay tribute to ‘best in the world’ Diego Maradona

Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre and sporting director Michael Zorc have paid tribute to Diego Maradona after he passed away on Wednesday.

Tributes have been pouring in for football icon Diego Maradona after his untimely death on Wednesday. Often considered to be one of the best players to ever play the beautiful game, the 1986 World Cup winner passed away after suffering a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60. People from all over the world have been mourning the death of Maradona, and remembering some of his finest moments on the football pitch.

Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre and sporting director Michael Zorc also paid tribute to Maradona on Thursday. Speaking during their pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga game against FC Köln, Favre and Zorc spoke about their memories of the Argentina and Napoli legend.

"Favre said, “Of course I have great memories of Maradona, his games, his goals, his quality. I personally played against him once in a friendly match. He was a fantastic player. Unfortunately, at 60, he died too young.”“I played against him in Barcelona once. I did not win many duels. In my day, he was definitely the best player in the world,” Zorc said."

A number of Borussia Dortmund players also paid tribute to Maradona on social media, with Jadon Sancho calling him ‘an inspiration.’ Axel Witsel posted a photo alongside the former Napoli star, and described him as ‘a true icon and legend of the game.’ While Emre Can said that Maradona’s legacy will live on forever.

Teams in the UEFA Champions League observed a minute’s silence for Maradona ahead of all of Wednesday’s fixtures. While Napoli are set to rename their stadium in honour of Maradona, who spent seven years at the club and helped them win two Serie A titles as well as the UEFA Cup.
