Julian Weigl is being linked with a return to the Bundesliga, just 12 months after leaving Borussia Dortmund to join Portuguese side SL Benfica.

After failing to earn a regular starting spot at Borussia Dortmund under Lucien Favre, Julian Weigl joined SL Benfica in January in search of more playing time. But things haven’t worked out as well as he would have liked in Portugal. After a promising start in the second half of last season, the defensive midfielder has fallen down the pecking order this season. He been limited to just ten appearances in all competitions so far this season, and has spent just 435 minutes on the pitch.

Sky Germany report that Weigl could be on his way back to the Bundesliga in January, with Hertha Berlin reportedly interested in signing him. Hertha Berlin were interested in signing the 25 year old when he was at Borussia Dortmund as well, before he ended up moving to Benfica.

Sky claim that Hertha Berlin are unwilling to meet the 20 million euros asking price set by Benfica, which could prove to be a roadblock in the potential transfer. Although they do report that the two clubs could agree to a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season.
