Champions League preview: Zenit St. Petersburg vs Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will be aiming to secure top spot in their Champions League group as they go up against Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund managed to qualify for the Champions League round of 16 with a game to spare, but there is still a lot to play for on the final matchday of the group stage. The Black and Yellows currently hold a one point lead over Lazio at the top of Group F. And they will be aiming to ensure that it stays that way, so they can get a more favourable draw in the round of 16, and of course, more prize money.

In order to finish top of their group, Borussia Dortmund must get a good result against Zenit St. Petersburg.

Zenit St. Petersburg enjoyed a dominant 5-1 win over FC Ural in the league at the weekend. But the Russian champions’ performances in the Champions League have been far from impressive. They were the top seed in the group, but go into the final matchday with only one point to their name.

Zenit will finish bottom of the group, no matter what the result is on Tuesday. But they will still want to end their Champions League run on a high with a good result against Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund’s season has hit a bit of roadblock, and they now find themselves desperately in need of a win. The Black and Yellows could only manage a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend, making it three games without a win.

Lucien Favre’s side go into the final group game with their place in the Champions League round of 16 already secure. But they still need to match Lazio’s result on Tuesday if they want to top the group.
