Nico Schulz has struggled to make an impact since his big money move from Hoffenheim. But Michael Zorc believes that he can still be a valuable player for Borussia Dortmund.

Nico Schulz joined Borussia Dortmund from TSG Hoffenheim for a reported fee of 25 million euros in 2019. But injuries and poor form, combined with the world class displays of Raphael Guerreiro have limited him to just 24 appearances over the last 18 months. The left wing-back has not been able to justify his heavy price tag, but sporting director Michael Zorc is not writing him off just yet.

Zorc wants the 27 year old to put in the fight as he looks to win his place back in the Borussia Dortmund starting XI.

"“He has to fight his way out of this difficult phase,” Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten. “It is important that he brings his speed into the game and that he’s more active. Then he can be valuable for us.”"

Schulz was sidelined with muscle injuries at the start of this season, but he has started the last two games at left wing-back. He put in a much-improved display against Zenit on Tuesday, and delivered some fine crosses going forward. Lucien Favre was pleased with the way Schulz played against Zenit, as Borussia Dortmund enjoyed a come from behind 2-1 win.

"“He was out for a long time, but he’s working hard and is active. I liked it (Schulz’ performance against Zenit), and it’s good for him.”"

With Raphael Guerreiro still struggling with a muscle injury, Schulz is likely to keep his spot in the starting XI for the Bundesliga game against VfB Stuttgart. And a good performance against the newly promoted side will go a long way in helping him restore his confidence.

Schulz will certainly be determined to make an impact, and with the European Championships coming up at the end of the season, he will have the added incentive to impress.
