Borussia Dortmund have sacked Lucien Favre following their 5-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to newly promoted VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. The result left them five points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings, and Lucien Favre has now paid the ultimate price for the defeat, with the BVB bosses deciding to part ways with the Swiss trainer. Favre’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but the decision to sack him was made after the defeat to Stuttgart.
Assistant coach Edin Terzic will take charge of Borussia Dortmund for Tuesday’s game against Werder Bremen. And Borussia Dortmund have also announced that the 38 year old will be the team’s caretaker manager until the end of the season.
Favre joined Borussia Dortmund from OGC Nice in 2018, replacing Peter Stöger as head coach. He led the club to two second place finishes. But he has been subject to plenty of criticism from fans and the media in recent months for the team’s playing style and failure to catch up to Bayern Munich.
"Announcing the departure of Lucien Favre, Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said, “We are all grateful for Lucien and his excellent work over the past two and a half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice. Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person.”"
Ruhr Nachrichten had earlier reported that Favre would not be getting a contract extension with his contract due to expire at the end of the season. But after a run of just one win in five games, the club was forced to act earlier.
A decision on the long-term replacement for Favre will likely be made towards the end of the season. For now, Edin Terzic will take over until the end of the season. Terzic’s first assignment as head coach will be on Tuesday, when Borussia Dortmund go up against Werder Bremen.
