Borussia Dortmund player ratings vs Werder Bremen: Marco Reus, Raphael Guerreiro score in narrow win
By Tushar Bahl
Goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Marco Reus helped Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 2-1 in the first game of the post-Lucien Favre era.
Looking to end their run of three games without a win in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund got off to the perfect start against Werder Bremen and took the lead in just the 12th minute through Raphael Guerreiro. They continued to look dangerous every time they ventured forward, and came close to adding to their lead on a number of occasions.
But Werder Bremen found their equaliser out of nowhere in the 28th minute, with Kevin Möhwald finding the net from the edge of the box.
Borussia Dortmund continued to create chances, but had to wait until the 78th minute to retake the lead. And the chance came as a bit of a gift after Bremen keeper Jiri Pavlenka fouled Manuel Akanji inside the box, resulting in a spot-kick. Pavlenka stepped up to make an excellent save off of Marco Reus’ penalty, but the Borussia Dortmund captain tapped home the rebound to make it 2-1.
That goal proved to be the winner, as the Black and Yellows claimed a narrow win. Head coach Edin Terzic will no doubt be pleased with the amount of chances his team created over the course of the 90 minutes. Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from the 2-1 win over Werder Bremen.
Roman Bürki (6/10)
Bürki will feel that he could have maybe done slightly better with Möhwald’s shot for Bremen’s goal. But he also made an excellent save to prevent Augustinsson from finding the net on the stroke of half time. He was barely tested after that.
