Borussia Dortmund player ratings from 2-1 defeat to Union Berlin
By Tushar Bahl
Jadon Sancho (4/10)
Sancho had an early chance to give Borussia Dortmund the lead, but his rather tame effort was saved by the goalkeeper. After that it was a night to forget for the Englishman, who was kept quiet by the Union Berlin defence. His decision making in and around the box was often very poor, which led to several ball losses.
Marco Reus (4/10)
Reus wasn’t able to build on his performance against Werder Bremen, as he was fairly anonymous for large parts of the game. The Borussia Dortmund captain did have a chance to give his side the lead in the second half, but he decided to pass to Moukoko, who was quickly closed down.
Gio Reyna (4/10)
Reyna also had an off night and wasn’t able to provide the spark Borussia Dortmund needed. He was too late to react to Awoniyi for the opener. Why no one else was given the duties to mark the dangerous forward is a bigger issue, but Reyna should have done better when put in the position.
Youssoufa Moukoko (8/10)
It seemed like Moukoko was the only Borussia Dortmund player who was up for this game. He did really well to set up Jadon Sancho for the first big chance of the game. He then hit the post on the stroke of half-time, before making Bundesliga history by scoring at the hour mark. It was a really well taken goal by Moukoko, who should no signs of nerves whatsoever.
Some of his movement was excellent and he wasn’t afraid to have a go at goal. His first senior goal will have given him immense confidence despite the defeat.
