Borussia Dortmund II cruised to a 3-0 win over Wupperstaler SV to keep pace with RW Essen at the top of the Regionalliga West standings.
Enrico Maaßen made five changes to the Borussia Dortmund U23s team that drew 2-2 against RW Oberhausen a few days ago, with Alaa Bakir, Lennard Maloney, and Patrick Osterhage among the players coming into the side.
Aiming get back to winning ways after two straight draws, Borussia Dortmund II dominated proceedings right from the start. Captain and top scorer Steffen Tigges came close to scoring early on, but was denied by the Wupperstaler goalkeeper. The 22 year old finally managed to break the deadlock in the 23rd minute to give BVB II the lead. His effort was deflected into the back of a net by a Wupperstaler defender. The goal was Tigges’ 12th of the season in just 18 appearances.
Borussia Dortmund II continued to create chances, but couldn’t manage to add to their lead before half time.
Enrico Maaßen brought on Tobias Raschl, Ansgar Knauff and Aday Ercan in the second half as he looked to help his team get over the line. And it was Aday Ercan who doubled Dortmund’s advantage in the 70th minute after Ansgar Knauff picked him out. Knauff then sealed the three points in the 87th minute after being set up by Tigges.
The win helped Borussia Dortmund stay within touching distance of Regionalliga West leaders RW Essen, who hold a seven point lead at the top of the table. Although, Enrico Maaßen’s side do have two games in hand. The U23s play their final game of 2020 on Tuesday as they go up against Fortuna Düsseldorf II.
