Michael Zorc critical of Borussia Dortmund’s performance in defeat to Union Berlin

Michael Zorc was not happy with Borussia Dortmund’s performance in their 2-1 defeat to Union Berlin, and felt that they made things too easy for their opponents.
Borussia Dortmund suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Union Berlin on Friday which saw them lose further ground to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings. Sporting director Michael Zorc thought that the Black and Yellows made things too easy for Union Berlin after letting in two cheap goals from corners. Zorc pulled no punches when speaking to Funke Media after the game:
"“We lost a game for the second time in a couple of weeks due to two cheap corner kicks. That is an unprofessional attitude. It can’t be that you lose twice in a short time by conceding two goals from corners. Defending corners is not that hard, the other teams manage to do it against us as well. We lacked the right attitude and concentration.”"
Zorc also felt that Borussia Dortmund’s build-up play was too slow against Union Berlin, and said that the attacking players need to perform better in the upcoming games.
"“We played too slowly, had too little ball speed, and not enough penetrating power up front. We need much better performances from our offensive players individually and collectively.”"
Zorc did sympathise with interim head coach Edin Terzic, who hasn’t been able to spend much time with his players on the training pitch since taking over last Sunday. “So far, Edin has hardly had any time to train with the team,” Zorc said.
Borussia Dortmund now head into the new year eight points behind Bayern Munich in the league standings, having lost five of their opening 13 games of the season. Zorc also spoke about Dortmund’s poor start to the season after the defeat to Union Berlin saw them drop to fifth place in the table.
"“Five defeats in 13 games, three of them at home, that’s just too many. The three teams at the top of the table have raced away from us, but looking there is not the most important issue for us at the moment.”"
With tough fixtures against the likes of Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach coming up in January, Borussia Dortmund need to pick up their form quickly or risk falling further in the league table. Next up for them is another tricky away game against second division side Eintracht Braunschweig in the second round of the DFB Pokal.
