Hans Joachim Watzke has said that Borussia Dortmund are not planning to make any new signings in the January transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund had a busy January transfer window in 2020, bringing in Erling Haaland and Emre Can to bolster the side. But the upcoming transfer window is set to be a quiet one for the club, as they continue to face the financial impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the Funke Media Group on Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans Joachim Watzke confirmed that they are unlikely to make a splash in the transfer market next month.

"“We are in the middle of the Corona pandemic with the resulting revenue losses over a long period of time. The coming transfer winter as such is hardly going to take place with us against this background”."

Borussia Dortmund signed Thomas Meunier (free transfer), Jude Bellingham (25 million euros) and Reinier Jesus (two year loan deal) in the summer transfer window. There were rumours that they could look to sign a back-up player for Erling Haaland in January, but Michael Zorc ruled out a potential move for a new striker earlier this month.

Borussia Dortmund have endured a difficult start to the season, and find themselves in fifth place in the Bundesliga standings going into the winter break. Watzke gave his thoughts on the team’s performances in all three competitions so far this season.

"“In the Bundesliga, we are four points short of a two-point average, which should be our aim. In the DFB Pokal, we have not yet faced the most difficult tasks, but we have made it to the round of 16 without any problems. In Braunschweig, I never had the feeling that we could be eliminated. In the Champions League, 13 points are perfectly fine.”"

The Black and Yellows have already suffered five defeats in the Bundesliga after 13 games. No other team in the top half of the table has lost more than three games. And Watzke gave his diagnosis on the recent poor run. “In recent weeks, unfortunately, we’ve lost our form. We need to work on ensuring that some players get into better shape,” Watzke said.
