Michael Zorc is not happy with the way Borussia Dortmund have performed so far in the Bundesliga and wants to see improvements on the pitch going into 2021.

Borussia Dortmund head into the new year in fifth place in the Bundesliga standings, eight points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. The Black and Yellows have already tasted five defeats this season, which is more than any other team in the top half of the table. And sporting director Michael Zorc expects the team to get considerably better in the coming weeks.

"Speaking to BVB-TV, Zorc said: “We are not performing in line with our targets in the league, including those set by the players before the season and as the season has progressed. We’ve lost too many games at home recently. Obviously its a huge miss for us when the Yellow Wall isn’t there, when we don’t have 80,000 fans here, but we cannot use that as an excuse.“So I expect the team to get considerably better, because none of us at Borussia Dortmund are happy with fifth place.”"

Zorc was particularly annoyed after the defeats to Union Berlin and FC Köln, where Borussia Dortmund conceded two goals each from corners.

"“Four corners cost us six points, and a team with our quality can’t let that happen. Overall we aren’t happy with how we’ve been doing in the Bundesliga over the last few months.”"

Zorc wants to see a new spirit and more attacking football from his team on the pitch in the upcoming matches.

"“We have to try to show a new spirit on the pitch, and try to play fresh, attacking football here at BVB that our fans can enjoy.”"

Michael Zorc: Borussia Dortmund not planning any big money signings

Zorc refused to rule out new signings at Borussia Dortmund in the upcoming January transfer window. But he also said that Der BVB aren’t planning to spend big money due to the financial impact caused by COVID-19.

"“I’ve been doing this job for over 20 years, and I’ve learnt not to rule anything out. But I wouldn’t expect much to happen – there is not much in the pipeline. Everyone knows about the financial situation, which is far from ideal in this coronavirus pandemic. It’s a difficult time for a lot of people, and we aren’t planning to make any marquee signings.”"

Asked about his wishes for the upcoming year, Zorc said that he hopes Borussia Dortmund can achieve their goals on the pitch this season. He also hopes that fans will be allowed to return to stadiums again soon, “because it’s like playing while using an emergency power generator!”
