Second half goals from Manuel Akanji and Jadon Sancho helped Borussia Dortmund beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in their first game of 2021.

After an underwhelming first half which saw Wolfsburg create the better chances, Borussia Dortmund took the lead through Manuel Akanji, with the centre-back heading home from Jadon Sancho’s corner. The Englishman then turned from provider to scorer, as his 92nd minute goal sealed a hard-fought win for the Black and Yellows.

Both teams had enough chances over the course of the 90 minutes, but ultimately, it was Borussia Dortmund’s quality in front of goal in the second half that made the difference. Edin Terzic will be pleased with the way his side defended. While Jadon Sancho’s first league goal of the season will no doubt give him some much needed confidence.

The win helped Borussia Dortmund leapfrog Wolfsburg and move up to fourth place in the Bundesliga table. Here are our player ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players from the game.

Roman Bürki (5/10)

Bürki wasn’t overly tested by Wolfsburg, but his distribution play was really poor at times. He gave the ball away three times over a two minute period in the second half, which summed up his lack of ball-playing skills.
