Borussia Dortmund player ratings against RB Leipzig: Haaland, Sancho, Reus star in 3-1 win
By Tushar Bahl
Jadon Sancho (8.5/10)
After a frustrating first half during which he struggled to get involved, Sancho showed his world-class quality in the second. He opened the scoring for Borussia Dortmund before setting up Erling Haaland for the second goal. The Englishman could have easily ended the evening with a hat-trick of assists, had some of the many chances he created been taken. He has had to endure a difficult few months, but after three goals and two assists in his last three games, Sancho is back in top form.
Marco Reus (8.5/10)
Reus led the team from the front with an inspired performance against Leipzig. The Borussia Dortmund captain helped out defensively and looked dangerous every time he ventured forward. He also showed his class with assists for the first and third goals, doubling his assists tally for the season. He will feel as though he could have done slightly better with his chance early in the second half, when Gulacsi made a relatively easy save to deny him. But overall, it was Reus’ best performance of the season so far.
Gio Reyna (6/10)
Reyna was outshone by his attacking teammates, but still put in a very committed shift. He worked hard and battled for every ball, even under heavy pressure from Leipzig. The 18 year old also pressed high up the pitch and helped out defensively, even if his decision making in the final third was off at times.
Erling Haaland (9/10)
Haaland’s determination and desire proved to be the difference in what was a game of fine margins for the most part. The striker made the first goal happen by winning the ball near the half-way line and then making a darting run into the box. He then cut the ball back for Reus, who flicked the ball for Sancho to turn home.
Haaland then dribbled his way past five defenders before finding Sancho, and then headed the ball into the net from the latter’s cross for his first goal of 2021. He then made another intelligent run before rounding the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. The 20 year old could have easily had a hat-trick had he not hit the woodwork just moments after Sancho’s opener.
