Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho lead Borussia Dortmund to 3-1 win over Leipzig
Borussia Dortmund picked up three massive points in their 3-1 win against RB Leipzig on Saturday, closing the gap to the top three.
Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland led Borussia Dortmund to a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday and it really was a tale of two halves. When these two fast paced attacking teams play each other you expect lots of attacking flair and goals but the first half was the exact opposite. Both teams played very conservative football in the first half, not taking too many risks.
Dortmund struggled a bit more than Leipzig did in the first half but neither team had anything to show for their effort after the first 45 minutes.
The second half was the game everyone watching was hoping for from the off. It was back and forth with chances on both ends of the pitch. Dortmund started to take over in the second half as their build up improved, and they started to find a rhythm on the counter attacks they got.
Jadon Sancho put Dortmund on the board in the 55th minute after an exceptional passing play that started with Haaland getting open out wide. Reus and Haaland combined near the touchline to send the striker with a clear path down the wing. He drove wide and Reus followed up in the middle and Haaland found Reus near the penalty spot. The Leipzig defenders didn’t see Sancho wide open on the other side but Reus did. And he played a superb back-heel touch for Sancho to fire home.
From then on it was mostly Dortmund hurting Leipzig with their devastating counter-attacks. Haaland went on to score a brace to wrap up the game in the final 20 minutes. The first he actually set up himself, drawing in and dribbling through five Leipzig players before finding Sancho out wide. Sancho whipped in a cross back post that Haaland was able to get his head on to score. His second goal came off a wonderful through ball from Reus to send Haaland in on goal. He rounded the keeper and sealed the three points for Dortmund.
Leipzig did add a last minute goal in the 90th minute on a bit of sloppy play from Dortmund but the game was already over by that point. This was a massive win for Dortmund as they continue to claw their way back up the table. Next up for Edin Terzic’s side is a home game against a struggle Mainz 05 side.
