Raphael Guerreiro reveals he came close to joining PSG before extending Borussia Dortmund contract

Raphael Guerreiro has revealed that he had ‘practically agreed’ to join Paris St. Germain in 2019 before eventually deciding to stay at Borussia Dortmund.
Raphael Guerreiro was heavily linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund in 2019, when Paris St. Germain and FC Barcelona were both rumoured to be interested in signing him. The left-back eventually signed a new four year contract with Borussia Dortmund in October 2019, but now he has revealed just how close he was to joining the French giants.
"In an interview with BeIN Sports, Guerreiro said: “There were detailed discussions. I had practically agreed to go there. Then there were changes at the club, and it went in a different direction.”"
Guerreiro has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent performers since signing his contract extension. The 27 year old has developed into one of the best full-backs in the world and is playing some of the best football of his career. He has three goals and six assists to his name from 18 appearances in all competitions so far this season and has become a key part of Dortmund’s attacking play.
The Portuguese international feels fortunate to have decided to extend his stay with the Black and Yellows, and hopes that he can continue to build on what was an excellent 2020 for him.
"“I continued at Dortmund and today I can say that fortunately I extended my contract. Because I played the best season of my career and I hope to continue like this.”"
Guerreiro, who has two and a half years remaining on his Borussia Dortmund contract, also spoke about the club’s decision to part ways with Lucien Favre. The Swiss trainer was sacked last month after a run of poor performances. And Guerreiro said that while the players were happy with Favre, the decision made by the club was the right one. “Borussia Dortmund made the right decision to change coaches, we needed an extra motivation and a new impetus,” Guerreiro said.
