Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Dortmund: Bundesliga Preview as top four rivals face off
By Lewis Fowler
Borussia Dortmund travel to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night knowing that a win will put them in third place in the Bundesliga standings at the half-way stage of the season.
Borussia Dortmund can swiftly put Saturday’s frustrating result against Mainz behind them with a victory away to fellow contenders Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen’s form has been patchy so far, but they remain key protagonists in this season’s Bundesliga battle for Bayern Munich’s crown. A win for either side could see them go four points behind the Bavarians, should the league leaders fall to Augsburg on Wednesday.

Bayer Leverkusen scored 12 goals in four league games in December, but they have stuttered in the league since the turn of the year. Peter Bosz’ side have only managed two goals in three league games in 2021 so far, and only goal difference separates them from their visitors ahead of Tuesday’s game. The home side have failed to beat RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and most recently Union Berlin in their other fixtures versus the current top five this season.

Borussia Dortmund have the chance to put Saturday’s stalemate with Mainz behind them and overtake their hosts in third place with a win on Tuesday night. The Black and Yellows must keep Leverkusen’s December goal-scoring form in their minds, as the hosts will be desperate to turn around their recent poor form. The Dortmund forwards had an off day against Mainz, and what better opportunity to put it right against Leverkusen and earn some momentum heading into the second half of the season.
