Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the table, as Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen all dropped points on matchday 17 in the Bundesliga.

Fans were treated to nine enthralling matches on the penultimate matchday of the first half of the season. Bayern Munich were the big winners of the weekend, while Luka Jovic marked his return to the Bundesliga by scoring a brace.

Bayern Munich overcome Freiburg test

Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller helped Bayern Munich earn a vital 2-1 win at home to SC Freiburg. Lewandowski’s early opener handed the Bavarians the lead, but Nils Petersen responded for the in-form Freiburg in the second half to make it 1-1. Freiburg’s joy was short-lived though, as Müller scored what proved to be the winner 15 minutes from time.

Borussia Dortmund frustrated by Mainz

Borussia Dortmund’s poor form against teams in relegation trouble continued on Saturday, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Mainz. Despite creating a host of big chances, the Black and Yellows seemed to be missing their shooting boots. And it was the 05ers who took the lead in the second half, courtesy of a stunning long-range effort from Levin Öztunalı.

Thomas Meunier equalised for Edin Terzic’s side, but Marco Reus missed a penalty soon after, as Borussia Dortmund failed to take advantage of Bayer Leverkusen’s defeat.
