“We lost another game through set-pieces” – Borussia Dortmund players annoyed after Gladbach loss
By Tushar Bahl
The Borussia Dortmund players were annoyed after set-pieces came back to haunt them once again in the 4-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. Three of the four goals scored by Gladbach came from set pieces, as the Black and Yellows simply did not defend with enough discipline and concentration. The fact that all four goals scored by Marco Rose’s side came from defenders made the defeat even more annoying.
Mats Hummels spoke after the game and said that they deserved to lose because of their poor defending from set-pieces.
"“We’ve lost another game through set-pieces today. We saw a really good football match from both teams and then we conceded three goals from set-pieces – and that’s why we lost. Defending set-pieces is a very big point for us. It wasn’t all bad, we weren’t outplayed in the game, but we conceded three set-piece goals and deserved to lose.”"
Marco Reus angry as same mistakes hurt Borussia Dortmund again
Marco Reus was also frustrated after watching Borussia Dortmund repeat the mistakes that have already hurt them so many times this season. The BVB skipper felt that after a good reaction in the second half, they gifted the game to Gladbach by conceding early in the second half.
"“We are repeating the same mistakes very often with the goals we concede and the individual mistakes. If we don’t stop doing that, it will be difficult to win games. We showed a decent reaction after the first 15 minutes. Then we conceded the 3-2 goal completely unnecessarily. A goal should never be allowed in that situation.”"
Reus also spoke the anger he displayed after being taken off in the second half with Borussia Dortmund desperately needing a goal. “Of course I was angry. Nobody likes to be substituted and nobody likes to be a goal behind,” Reus said. “We wanted to win the game and that’s why it was a normal reaction from me.”
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc, who was critical after watching his team concede two goals from corners in the defeat to Union Berlin last month, said that they can forget about winning matches if they keep conceding so many set-piece goals.
"“If you concede three goals in a game like this against a good team through set pieces, then you don’t really need to worry about the result in the end. It’s a relatively simple story to tell.”"
The defeat to Gladbach saw Borussia Dortmund drop out of the top four, and they could find themselves as low as eighth in the Bundesliga standings if other results don’t go their way this weekend. Der BVB now have a week off to prepare for their next game. They will take on FC Augsburg at the Westfalenstadion next weekend.
