Borussia Dortmund 12th in Deloitte Football Money League; Smallest revenue decrease among clubs in the list

Borussia Dortmund are 12th in the 2019/20 Deloitte Football Money League which charts the financial performances of some of Europe’s highest revenue generating clubs. The Black and Yellows only saw a 2% revenue decrease despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the smallest decrease across the Money League (excluding Zenit. St Petersburg and Everton, who recorded a revenue increase).

Borussia Dortmund recorded revenues of 371.7 million euros in 2019, and their revenues dropped by just six million euros to 365.7 million euros over the past 12 months.

Der BVB’s finances were affected by games being playing behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Westfalenstadion having a capacity of 80,000 plus supporters, not having fans in stadiums affected Dortmund more than most clubs. But their broadcast and commercial revenues slightly offset the loss in matchday revenue. The club’s broadcast revenue is up by 2.5 million euros, while the commercial revenue is up by 4.8 million euros.

Dortmund’s commercial prospects also look bright on the back of a new deal with kit provider Puma, as well as new partnerships with shirt sponsors 1&1 and Evonik. The club’s recent commercial drive and marketing attempts in overseas markets have also played a role in the revenue growth.

Borussia Dortmund are one of four Bundesliga clubs listed in the Deloitte Football Money League, with Bayern Munich third in the list, Schalke 04 in 16th place and Eintracht Frankfurt 20th. Schalke saw their revenue fall by 31%. While Bayern Munich recorded a 4% decrease in their revenue, and pipped Manchester United in third place. The Bundesliga as a league also saw the smallest revenue decrease of Europe’s top five leagues.
