Thomas Meunier determined to improve after disappointing start to Borussia Dortmund career
By Tushar Bahl
Thomas Meunier has admitted that he hasn’t made the best of starts to his Borussia Dortmund career since moving to the club in the summer. The 29 year old joined the Black and Yellows on a free transfer from Paris St. Germain in the summer, but hasn’t yet been able to justify the club’s decision to hand him a four year contract. And the right-back has now said that he needs to do better after an underwhelming first half of the season.
"In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, Meunier said: “I haven’t done enough offensively. With a team like Borussia Dortmund, even as a fullback, I have to contribute better to the offensive play.”“One goal and one assist, I’m disappointed – and you probably are, too.”“I must become the Thomas Meunier that everyone expects. I have to work on myself, I know that. I want to go forward, help the team, make a difference.”"
Meunier also spoke about his miss in the DFL-Supercup clash against Bayern Munich earlier this season, which proved to be very costly for Borussia Dortmund. He admitted that he replayed that miss 30-40 times at home and it made him sink into his couch.
"“I remember with horror this scene in the Supercup in Munich, when I virtually shot over the empty goal. I watched the replay 30, 40 times and I sank into the couch. How did I manage to miss it?”“The fact is that my confidence was gone. I had to start with the basics and build my game up again piece by piece. Since the beginning of the year I feel better. I strongly believe that I will reach my previous level again soon.”"
Thomas Meunier believes he has gained more sharpness since the turn of the year
Meunier has made 21 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund, scoring one goal and providing two assists. His only goal for Der BVB came in the 1-1 draw against Mainz earlier this month, and Meunier believes that he is now getting his self-confidence and sharpness back after a turbulent few months.
"“Things are slowly getting better. The game against Mainz, in which I scored a goal and won a penalty kick, was probably my best game. The feeling is coming back, I now have more self-confidence, there is more sharpness in my actions.”"
The Belgian international also believes that Borussia Dortmund have one of the best squads in Europe, and they must aim to win at least one title every year.
"“Take a look at our squad! Borussia Dortmund is one of the best teams in Europe. Our goal must be to win at least one trophy every year. Supercup, DFB-Pokal, Bundesliga. And the quarter-finals in the Champions League.”“I’m an ambitious person, and I’m sure that I can achieve something with BVB in the next four years at least.”"
While Borussia Dortmund are already out of the Bundesliga title race this season, Meunier will be hoping to help his team win the DFB Pokal and make a deep run in the UEFA Champions League.
