Borussia Dortmund 3-1 FC Augsburg: Back to winning ways for BVB
Borussia Dortmund moved back into the Bundesliga top five as they came from behind to earn a 3-1 win at home to Augsburg. Looking to bounce back from two straight defeats, Edin Terzic named a heavy attack-minded lineup. Der BVB started the game off on the front foot, holding possession well and pushing Augsburg back deeper into their half. The away side were set up in a 5-4-1 formation to try and minimise the space for the likes of Jadon Sancho, Julian Brandt and Gio Reyna to operate in.
Another slow start by Borussia Dortmund
Six minutes into the game, Jadon Sancho came close to opening the scoring for Dortmund after he picked the ball up on the edge of the box and attempted to finesse it into the top corner, but his effort was just over. Erling Haaland and Julian Brandt also had half-chances to score within the first ten minutes.
Augsburg were struggling to keep the ball and were resorting to long balls, and one of those passes led to the opener as Andre Hahn took advantage of some sloppy defending to make it 1-0.
Looking to issue an immediate response, Borussia Dortmund were given a penalty in the 20th minute after a VAR check for a handball inside the box, but Erling Haaland’s attempt rattled the crossbar. Two minutes later, Haaland had another good opportunity to equalise but his headed attempt was well saved by Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz.
Dortmund finally equalised in the 25th minute through Thomas Delaney, who was able to head home Marco Reus’ free kick. Gio Reyna then had a good opportunity almost instantly to make it 2-1, but wasn’t able to get the ball under control quickly enough. Augsburg came close right before the end of the first half with a low shot from the edge of the box but it went wide.
Patience rewarded for Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho leads the way
The Black and Yellows began the second half on the front foot and took their time to ensure that they did not make any mistakes leading to a turnover. They continued to box Augsburg inside their own half and kept looking to find an opening, with Sancho and Guerreiro linking up really well on the left flank to cause problems.
In the 62nd minute, Jadon Sancho finally put Dortmund ahead with a composed finish in the box into the bottom corner after being played through by a lovely lobbed ball by Raphael Guerreiro. Dortmund then added a third and sealed the win in the 74th minute, after Haaland’s low cross deflected off Felix Uduokhai and into the net.
Borussia Dortmund saw the game out and secured the win to finally relieve Edin Terzic and his players off some of the pressure. Next up for the Black and Yellows is a home game against SC Paderborn in the third round of the DFB-Pokal.
