Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho break records in Borussia Dortmund’s win over Augsburg
By Tushar Bahl
It was an afternoon to remember for Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho as they helped Borussia Dortmund earn a 3-1 win over FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Reus assisted the opener for the Black and Yellows, while Sancho scored the go-ahead goal. And the BVB attacking duo broke long-standing records during the win. Here are some of the records and interesting facts from the game.
- Youngest player to 33 Bundesliga goals: Jadon Sancho’s goal against FC Augsburg was his 33rd Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund. At just 20 years and 311 days, he became the youngest player to reach that mark in Bundesliga history, beating the record set by Schalke 04 legend Klaus Fischer.
- Most assists by a Borussia Dortmund player: Marco Reus registered his 87th assist for Borussia Dortmund when his whipped free-kick was headed home by Thomas Delaney. The assist helped the BVB captain become the club’s leading assist-maker. He moved one clear of of Andreas Möller, who got 86 assists during his time at the Westfalenstadion.
- Landmark appearances: Saturday’s game also marked a landmark moment for Marco Reus, who made his 200th Bundesliga appearance for Borussia Dortmund. Mats Hummels also made his 350th Bundesliga appearance, with 275 of those games coming for the Black and Yellows.
- Third straight penalty miss: Borussia Dortmund have now missed each of their last three penalties. Marco Reus had his spot-kick saved against Werder Bremen last month, but scored on the rebound. He then missed his penalty against Mainz earlier this month. Erling Haaland stepped up when Dortmund were awarded a penalty in the first half against Augsburg. But he hit the crossbar, missing the first penalty of his career.
- Second half success: Borussia Dortmund continued their trend of being more dangerous in the second half by scoring two goals to seal a vital win. 30 of Dortmund’s 38 goals (78.9%) in the Bundesliga this season have come in second halves of matches.
Borussia Dortmund also benefited from an own-goal in the Bundesliga for the first time in nearly two and a half years, as Augsburg’s Felix Uduokhai put the ball into his own net to make it 3-1. The last time BVB were helped by an own goal was on the opening day of the 2018/19 season against RB Leipzig.
