Borussia Dortmund: Sebastian Kehl backs Gio Reyna to find his form again soon
By Tushar Bahl
Sebastian Kehl is confident that Gio Reyna will be back to his best soon, with the Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder struggling for form at the moment. The 18 year old has not registered a goal or an assist in his last nine appearances, with his last goal coming in the 5-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart almost two months ago.
Kehl believes that these fluctuations in form are normal for a player of Reyna’s age, and he just needs to keep working hard to find his stride again. Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten, the head of Borussia Dortmund’s players department said:
"“At this age, fluctuations are normal and part of the process. It’s a normal process that he is going through right now. He just has to keep going. He played a lot of really good games for us in October and November. He has to remember that.”"
After making his first-team breakthrough in the second half of last season, Gio Reyna has become a regular starter for Borussia Dortmund this season. The United States international has made a total of 28 appearances across all competitions so far, scoring four goals and providing six assists.
Reyna spoke last month about how the compressed nature of the current season led to him feeling more mentally and physically exhausted than ever before the winter break.
"“It’s been a crazy season,” Reyna said in January. “I’ve never been so mentally and physically exhausted as I was after the Union game. I really needed a break, but in the end it was only four days off over Christmas.”"
Reyna was recently forced to miss the game against Mainz due to a throat infection, and has started only one of the last four games since then. He could be back in the starting XI on Saturday for the Bundesliga clash against Freiburg.
Reyna starred and got a hat-trick of assists when the Black and Yellows faced Freiburg earlier in the season. And he will no doubt be aiming to rediscover his form against Christian Streich’s side when the two teams meet on Saturday.
