Mats Hummels: Borussia Dortmund’s goal of Champions League qualification in danger after Freiburg defeat
Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg on Saturday, with long-range strikes from Jeong Woo-yeong and Jonathan Schmid proving to be decisive. The defeat saw the Black and Yellows lose further ground in the top four race. And Mats Hummels has warned that they may miss out on Champions League qualification if they don’t put an end to their poor run of form soon.
"Speaking to Sky Germany after the game, Hummels said: “Football is a results game. Sometimes everything goes in for the opponent and not so much for us. We have to accept criticism for the result.”“Our goal is in danger. The goal is to qualify for the Champions League. It’s getting choppy now, but that doesn’t matter. We have to fight for it. We know that’s the minimum we have to achieve.”"
Borussia Dortmund are currently in sixth place in the Bundesliga standings with 32 points after 20 games. They are three points behind fourth placed Bayer Leverkusen, and if Eintracht Frankfurt beat Hoffenheim on Sunday, the gap between BVB and fourth place will increase to four points.
Emre Can: Borussia Dortmund must flip the switch quickly
Emre Can, who played at right back in the defeat to Freiburg, believes that Borussia Dortmund did not have luck on their side on Saturday, but they must start winning games like this soon. The German international added that he cannot imagine not playing European football with Der BVB next season.
"“We want to win every match. But somehow we always lose games in a similar manner. If we have luck on our side for once, we might win a game like this one.”“We have to start winning quickly now. I can’t imagine not playing on the international stage with Borussia Dortmund next year – we have to flip the switch now.”"
Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic lamented the mistakes which proved to be costly in the Freiburg defeat, and said that they must put in more effort if they want to be successful.
"“We’re obviously disappointed and angry about how the game went. We made mistakes once again that shouldn’t have happened. All of us simply need to do more in order to be successful.“We have to work hard, stay positive – and we have to be ready to run the extra metre. And not just when we’re 2-0 down.”"
Borussia Dortmund now have a week to prepare for their next game, which will see them go up against TSG Hoffenheim at home. They will then be in Champions League round of 16 action against Sevilla, before making the short trip to local rivals Schalke.
