Michael Zorc calls for better performances from Borussia Dortmund’s established players

Michael Zorc wants to see better performances from the established players after watching Borussia Dortmund suffer a 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg on Saturday. The defeat, BVB’s eighth of the season in the Bundesliga, saw them lose further ground to their top four rivals. And Zorc wasn’t pleased with the way the team performed against Freiburg. Speaking to Funke Media, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director said:
"“We had chances to win the game – or to make it 2-2. But when 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko takes the most shots on goal, even though he was only on the pitch for just over half an hour, that says something about our attacking performance. I expect a much better performance from all of our established players.”"
Zorc also lamented the ‘chain of errors’ which heavily cost Borussia Dortmund in the defeat to SC Freiburg. “It’s hard to find one single reason,” Zorc said. “The goals we conceded each came from a chain of errors. It’s always about the whole team. Sometimes we concede goals through set-piece situations, now through two long-range shots.”
While Zorc wasn’t pleased with the team’s performance, he backed Edin Terzic to lead Borussia Dortmund to a place in the top four. The 38 year old interim head coach has come under a bit of pressure in recent weeks, but he retains the full support of the BVB bosses.
"“He (Terzic) was rightly disappointed with the team yesterday, and he made that clear to them. We have a clear goal, which is to finish in fourth place, and we want to achieve that with Edin. I have confidence in him.”"
Borussia Dortmund head of players’ department Sebastian Kehl also backed Terzic, saying that they have absolutely no criticism of the work he has done so far.
"“Every day we see how Edin Terzic works with the players both professionally and emotionally,” Kehl said. “How meticulously he works and how clearly he addresses problem areas. Therefore, we have absolutely no criticism of his work. We will absolutely continue to show trust that he will reach the Champions League with the team.”"
Borussia Dortmund currently find themselves in sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, four points behind Eintracht Frankfurt, who occupy fourth place. Next up for Dortmund is another tough game against TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
With 14 games still remaining before the end of the season, Borussia Dortmund still have enough time to turn things around. But with teams like Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg in excellent form at the moment, they need to start picking up victories soon if they want to play Champions League football next season.
