Thomas Delaney does not think that football players should be given preferential treatment when it comes to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder believes that footballers must wait to get the vaccination jab just like everyone else in society.

Speaking on Wednesday, Delaney said that he will definitely get vaccinated when the time comes, but football is not important enough for players to be given special status.

"“When the time comes, I’ll definitely get vaccinated,” Delaney said. “But it’s not our turn yet. Things are going well in our Corona protection bubble at the moment. It’s important that we as football players don’t live in a different world.”“Football is not that important. We just have to wait until our time to get the vaccine comes – just like everyone else in the world. My opinion is very clear that we should not be vaccinated earlier than others.”"

This topic has been the subject of a lot of debate in recent weeks, with many sports authorities in the world looking to push the idea of getting their athletes vaccinated. With the Olympic Games coming up in July, some countries have already started vaccinating some of their athletes.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also suggested earlier this week that football players should be vaccinated earlier as it could help increase the society’s trust in the vaccine. His comments were criticised by many, including Werder Bremen midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt, who said that footballers are privileged enough to be allowed to play at the moment.

Thomas Delaney: Borussia Dortmund have to finish in the Champions League places

Thomas Delaney knows all about what’s at stake for Borussia Dortmund in the final few months of the season. The Black and Yellows are currently sixth in the Bundesliga standings, and could well miss out on Champions League football next season if their form does not improve quickly. But the Dane is up for the fight.

"“I think everyone knows what’s at stake. Everyone knows that we have to at least make it to the Champions League places. Maybe not everyone is aware of the consequences if we don’t make it, but we’re a Champions League team and we have to be in it. Everyone in the team knows and understands that.”"
