Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Hoffenheim: Three takeaways from frustrating draw
By Tushar Bahl
Is Edin Terzic good enough to lead Borussia Dortmund to a top four finish?
Borussia Dortmund made the brave call to appoint the untested Edin Terzic until the end of the season after sacking Lucien Favre in December. The 38 year old made a promising start, beating Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig in the first two games of 2021. But a run of one win in six league games since has left the Black and Yellows in danger of missing out on Champions League football next season.
Terzic has come under pressure as a result of the recent poor form. And things will not be getting any easier for him and Dortmund, with crunch games against Sevilla, Schalke, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich all coming up in the next few weeks.
Terzic is obviously not the only one at fault for Borussia Dortmund’s recent woes. A string of shambolic individual errors from the defenders and goalkeepers have not helped his cause. Nor has the poor form of a number of forwards. But one can’t help but feel that he is not yet ready for a task this enormous.
Importantly for Terzic, he still retains the trust of the Borussia Dortmund bosses. And it is highly likely that he will stay on as head coach at least until the end of the season.
The next month will be massive (and potentially season defining) for Borussia Dortmund’s season and Terzic’s career, with seven crucial games coming up across three competitions. It is quite possible that Terzic will be able to turn the tide by getting some big results in the next few games. But if they keep playing like they are at the moment, Dortmund’s hopes of playing Champions League next season will be in serious jeopardy.
