Borussia Dortmund: Edin Terzic heaps praise on Erling Haaland after win over Sevilla
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic was delighted with Erling Haaland’s performance in the 3-2 win in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Sevilla. But more than the 20 year old’s goalscoring exploits, it was his all-round work for the team that pleased Terzic.
Speaking at his post-match press conference after the win over Sevilla, Terzic said about Haaland:
"“Erling rewarded himself with those two goals. We wanted to have Erling in a good position when there was a counterattack on for us. But his presence, the way he kept the ball and fought for the team, that’s what we’re proud of.”“The way he worked for the team is exactly what we needed. Erling was fantastic. But everybody in the team deserves the same praise. It was a great team effort and Erling played his part in it.”"
Edin Terzic’s future was also confirmed ahead of the game, with sporting director Michael Zorc announcing that the 38 year old will stay on at Borussia Dortmund beyond the end of the season as part of Marco Rose’s coaching staff. Speaking to DAZN, Zorc said:
"“We are very pleased that Marco Rose will be our coach from the new season. The reactions in the team have been positive. Of course, we have also spoken with Edin. Edin will remain with us in the coaching team next season and go back to his old role as co-trainer. We’ve been very open and transparent about that.”"
Marco Reus: One game not enough to make up for poor recent performances
Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus also spoke after the game, and said that apart from Sevilla’s early goal, the first half went exactly like they had planned. He felt that Dortmund were a bit too passive after the break, but was delighted to get the win in the end.
"“It feels very good. The first half, outside of the early goal, went exactly as we had planned. We sat a little deeper than normal but were very compact. We won the ball well, played it forward into dangerous positions quickly and took the lead.”“The second half was not so good because we were too passive. We lost the ball too easily. But we’re very, very happy that we were able to get the win here.”"
Reus provided the assist for Haaland’s second goal, bringing up his first goal involvement in the UEFA Champions League since December 2019. And the 31 year old believes that despite the win over Sevilla, the Black and Yellows must keep their performance levels high in this weekend’s derby against Schalke 04.
"“One game is not enough to make up for it (recent poor results). We took an important step tonight and we have to show the same on the pitch in the derby as we showed here in the first half.”"
Borussia Dortmund hold a 3-2 lead over Sevilla going into the second leg at the Signal Iduna Park. But they have a number of big games coming up in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal before that, with fixtures against Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayen Munich right around the corner.
