Jadon Sancho masterclass helps Borussia Dortmund cruise past Arminia Bielefeld
Jadon Sancho and Mahmoud Dahoud continued their excellent run of form to lead Borussia Dortmund to comfortable a 3-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld.
Matchday 23 of the Bundesliga season saw Borussia Dortmund host relegation threatened Arminia Bielefeld in a crucial match in their quest for Champions League spots.
The Black and Yellows went into the game following back to back wins over Schalke and Sevilla, and were looking to extend their momentum against a struggling Bielefeld side. Their motivation was further strengthened by Eintracht Frankfurt’s defeat to Werder Bremen on Friday.
And you could see that Borussia Dortmund meant business right from the first whistle. The home side took a positive, yet patient approach to the game. Jude Bellingham and Gio Reyna proved Dortmund’s active and straight-forward approach to this game. Arminia Bielefeld responded to this early barrage by pressing high up the pitch, with Ritsu Doan coming close from a long range effort.
Despite Arminia’s best efforts, the first half was owned by Borussia Dortmund who created several good chances to take the lead. Erling Haaland and Marco Reus came close to opening the score for Dortmund, but goalkeeper Stefan Ortega stood firm to deny them. One of Dortmund’s top performers in the opening forty-five minutes was Mahmoud Dahoud. His creative ball distribution in the middle of the park had been vital in the last few matches, and today was no exception.
Despite his smart link-up play, Dahoud’s best contribution arrived three minutes into the second half. A revitalised Jadon Sancho worked his magic through the left wing before setting up the midfielder, who fired home from the edge of the box. Ten minutes later, Sancho doubled Dortmund’s lead from the spot after Marco Reus was fouled inside the box.
The home side continued to dominate proceedings, but Bielefeld played with great resolve and tested the Dortmund defence on a few occasions. Their response to being down was to make a triple change that had some effect on the game, as the Dortmund defence was tested on a few occasions.
Edin Terzic brought on Reinier for Marco Reus with ten minutes left on the clock, and the young Brazilian delivered with a fine third goal for BVB. First touch, first goal in a Black and Yellow jersey, and the final nail in Bielefeld’s coffin.
Borussia Dortmund sealed their third win a row, their best winning streak so far this year. Up next for them is Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB Pokal quarter finals. This will be the first of three crucial and highly challenging matches in a row for BVB: Gladbach, Bayern Munich and Sevilla. And the next three games could go a long way into shaping their season.
