Borussia Dortmund to host Holstein Kiel in DFB-Pokal semi-finals
Borussia Dortmund will go up against Holstein Kiel in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal as they look to continue their quest to reach the final in Berlin.
Borussia Dortmund got a favourable draw in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals on Sunday, as they were drawn at home to second division side Holstein Kiel. Dortmund have avoided facing fellow favourites RB Leipzig until a potential final, as Julian Nagelsmann’s side will face the winner of Werder Bremen vs Jahn Regensburg in the semi-finals.
While Holstein Kiel are a 2.Bundesliga side, they are not a team that Borussia Dortmund can take lightly. Holstein Kiel have made their way through the DFB Pokal rounds in a unique fashion, beating the likes of FC Rielasingen-Arlen, Bayern Munich, Darmstadt and RW Essen. Currently sitting in second place in the 2.Bundesliga standings, they will pose a real threat to a Dortmund side as heavy underdogs with nothing to lose.
Borussia Dortmund on the other hand have had a bit of an easier time progressing through the Pokal rounds, although they did face extra time once. Dortmund had to get through MSV Duisburg, Eintracht Braunschweig, Paderborn and Borussia Monchengladbach to reach the semi-finals. While Dortmund are still playing on all three fronts right now, the Bundesliga, Pokal and Champions League, the German Cup represents by far their best chance for silverware this season.
The semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal will take place on May 01 and 02, 2021. The final, as always, will be held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on May 13. And Borussia Dortmund will certainly be aiming to make it there and lift the famous trophy for the first time since 2017.
