Mats Hummels is set to make his return to the Germany squad at this summer’s European Championships, per a report from Kicker. The magazine claims that according to well-informed sources, the Borussia Dortmund centre-back will be included in the squad for the Euros, along with Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller.

Hummels was one of the three players axed by Germany head coach Joachim Löw in March 2019. He hasn’t been considered for selection since, although Löw has recently softened his stance about bringing him, as well as Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng, back into the fold. It was revealed earlier this week that Löw will be stepping down as Germany head coach at the end of the European Championships.

And he will certainly be hopeful that the returning Hummels and Müller can help turn things around for the 2014 FIFA World Cup winners. The German national team has endured a difficult period since their early exit at the 2018 World Cup. They won just two competitive games in 2020 and ended the year with a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc was also asked about Hummels’ potential return to the national team, and said that it would be a logical step. “I can’t confirm this yet. But I think it would be a logical step, because he’s been performing well for weeks and months and is one of the best centre-backs in Germany.”

Mats Hummels, who has won 70 caps for his country, has been one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga this season. Thomas Müller is also enjoying an impressive season with Bayern Munich, and has ten goals and 11 assists to his name in 22 Bundesliga appearances.
