Bundesliga Roundup: Marco Rose and Borussia Mönchengladbach slump to sixth straight defeat
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s free-fall continued on Friday evening, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Augsburg. The defeat was their sixth in a row in all competitions, and heaped more pressure on Marco Rose. The Foals have not won a game since it was announced that Rose would be leaving to join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
And his time at Gladbach could yet come to a premature end, with a large section of fans calling for him to be sacked. Marco Rose gave a defiant “No” when asked after the game whether he was thinking about resigning. But with fan discontent growing with every game, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl may well be forced into making a decision if things do not improve soon.
The defeat leaves Gladbach in tenth place in the Bundesliga standings. And they could find themselves as many as 13 points behind fourth placed Eintracht Frankfurt come the end of the weekend.
Clinical Augsburg punish wasteful Borussia Mönchengladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach dominated the game and had nearly three times as many shots as their opponents. They also enjoyed 65% of possession, but were undone by their lack of composure in front of goal.
Lars Stindl missed a penalty in the first half, while Marcus Thuram, Matthias Ginter and Valentino Lazaro also failed to bury their chances. And Gladbach were made to pay by Augsburg after the break, with Ruben Vargas scoring the opening goal. Stindl did equalise for Marco Rose’s side, but Marco Richter and André Hahn then scored in the final 15 minutes to give Augsburg a 3-1 win.
While Gladbach remain in crisis, Augsburg are on the up. They have won two of their last three games and are now ten points clear of the relegation play-offs spot.
