Borussia Dortmund II came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in their top of the table clash against Rot-Weiss Essen in the Regionalliga West on Wednesday.

Looking to continue their impressive unbeaten run, Borussia Dortmund II started well and applied the early pressure on the Essen goal. Tobias Raschl had a chance to give his side the lead in just the sixth minute, but he wasn’t able to beat the goalkeeper. The home side started to grow into the game, and got their reward in the 16th minute when Simon Engelmann turned home his 21st league goal of the season.

Rot-Weiss Essen started to dominate after taking the lead and came close to making it 2-0 on a couple of occasions. BVB II defender Niklas Dams then had a late chance to level the scores going into the break, but he was denied by the post after a well worked corner.

The Black and Yellows applied more pressure on the Essen goal after the break as they looked to find the equaliser. And the goal finally arrived in the 76th minute when Richmond Tachie headed home Alaa Bakir’s cross to make it 1-1.

There was still plenty of time for both teams to find a winner, but there were to be no more goals. The two title rivals played out a 1-1 draw, which was a fair result in the end.

The result means that Borussia Dortmund II still have a four point lead at the top of the Regionalliga West standings, although RW Essen do have a game in hand. And with neither side showing signs of giving in, this title race looks set to go down to the wire.
