Bundesliga Roundup: Ten-man Bayern thrash Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund drop points against Köln

Fans were treated to another action-packed weekend in the Bundesliga, as Bayern Munich maintained their four point at the top of the table. While Borussia Dortmund lost ground on their top four rivals once again.

The matchday began with RB Leipzig earning a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld on Friday, courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer’s second half winner. Bayern Munich responded to their title rivals’ win by thrashing VfB Stuttgart 4-0 despite playing the majority of the game with ten men.

The Bavarians had Alphonso Davies sent off early on, but Robert Lewandowski scored a first half hat-trick to stun Stuttgart. Serge Gnabry also found the net as Bayern enjoyed a comfortable win.

Borussia Dortmund dropped points against relegation threatened FC Köln once again, with Erling Haaland scoring a late equaliser to rescue a 2-2 draw. Haaland had earlier given Dortmund the lead, but Köln roared back into the game thanks to goals from Ondrej Duda and Ismail Jakobs. Haaland then turned home Ansgar Knauff’s cross in the 90th minute to ensure a share of the spoils.

The draw leaves Borussia Dortmund four points behind Eintracht Frankfurt, who enjoyed a 5-2 win over Union Berlin on Saturday. André Silva and Max Kruse both scored braces in what was a goal fest at the Deutsche Bank Park. Filip Kostic and Timothy Chandler also found the net for the Eagles. And Adi Hütter’s side also had Robert Andrich to thank for an embarrassing own goal from 30 yards out.

Wolfsburg also continued their fine run of form, beating Werder Bremen 2-1. Josh Sargent scored an own goal to give the Wolves the lead, before Wout Weghorst made it 2-0. Kevin Möhwald pulled a goal back for Bremen, but they were not able to find an equaliser.

Borussia Mönchengladbach finally ended their barren run of form by earning a 3-0 win over Schalke 04. Lars Stindl opened the scoring for Marco Rose’s side, before Stefan Lainer doubled their advantage in the second half. Frederik Rønnow’s own goal then made it 3-0, as Schalke’s miserable run continued.

Sunday saw Hertha Berlin earn a massive 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen to heap even more pressure on Peter Bosz. Deyovaisio Zeefuik, Matheus Cunha and Jhon Córdoba all scored in the first half to lift the Berliners up to 14th place.

Mainz 05 also lifted themselves out of the relegation places with a priceless 2-1 win away to Hoffenheim. Robert Glatzel scored just 30 seconds into the game to give the 05ers the lead. Ihlas Bebou equalised for Hoffenheim, but Dominik Kohr scored what proved to be the winner in the 41st minute. Freiburg moved up to eighth place with a 2-0 win over Augsburg, courtesy of second half goals from Roland Sallai and Philipp Lienhart.
