Bayer Leverkusen sack Peter Bosz, appoint former Borussia Dortmund trainer Hannes Wolf as head coach
Bayer Leverkusen have parted ways with under-fire head coach Peter Bosz after a horror start to 2021. The Dutchman will be replaced by former Borussia Dortmund youth coach Hannes Wolf, who has been appointed as head coach until the end of the season
The decision to sack Peter Bosz comes after Bayer Leverkusen’s dismal run of just two wins in their last 12 games. Die Werkself currently find themselves in sixth place in the Bundesliga standings and are in real danger of missing out on qualifying for European football. They also suffered embarrassing exits in both the UEFA Europa League and the DFB Pokal last month, bowing out of the cup competitions after defeats to BSC Young Boys and Rot-Weiss Essen respectively.
Peter Bosz, who spent five months as Borussia Dortmund head coach before being sacked in December 2017, joined Bayer Leverkusen in December 2018. Leverkusen qualified for the Champions League in Bosz’ first season in charge, and finished fifth last season.
Bosz will be replaced by Hannes Wolf, who spent five years as a youth team coach at Borussia Dortmund, before joining VfB Stuttgart. He also coached Hamburger SV and KRC Genk, and is currently also the head coach of the German U-18s national team.
The 39 year old’s main task will be to ensure that Bayer Leverkusen qualify for European football. Leverkusen are currently in sixth place, which would see them qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League. But if one of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig wins the DFB-Pokal, sixth place would be enough to secure UEFA Europa League qualification.
