Borussia Dortmund II took a big stride towards promotion with a 3-1 win away to Bonners SC on Wednesday. The win helped the Black and Yellows move seven points clear of second placed Rot-Weiss Essen in the Regionalliga West standings.

The Borussia Dortmund U-23s were boosted by the returns of Ansgar Knauff and Tobias Raschl, who missed Saturday’s game after being called up to the senior team. But the relegation threatened Bonners SC made sure that this wasn’t going to be a straight-forward win for the promotion chasers. BVB II had to be at their very best defensively on a number of occasions in the first half, as the home side caused them a lot of problems.

Enrico Maaßen’s side still managed to create a few decent chances of their own, with Ansgar Knauff forcing two good saves from the Bonner goalkeeper. Richmond Tachie then gave Dortmund the lead in the 29th minute after being teed up by captain Steffen Tigges. The 21 year old forward continued his good form by scoring his ninth goal of the season.

Borussia Dortmund II took a slender lead going into the break, and they started the second half well on top. The second goal arrived just before the hour mark, with Tachie turning provider for Tigges, who netted his 17th goal of the season. Two became three soon after, as Taylan Duman scored from the spot after a Bonner player had handled the ball inside the box.

Tackie Sai pulled a goal back for Bonner in the 74th minute, but Borussia Dortmund II held on to claim the vital three points. To make the evening even sweeter for Der BVB, RW Essen suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Ahlen. The games keep on coming for the U-23s, as they will be away to Fortuna Düsseldorf U-23s on Saturday.
