Five Borussia Dortmund players were in action for their national teams on Thursday, and all five of them enjoyed relatively comfortable wins.
Jude Bellingham made his competitive debut for England, coming as a half-time substitute in their World Cup qualifier against San Marino. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder showed glimpses of his incredible talent. He played with great composure and helped the Three Lions earn a dominant 5-0 win.
Emre Can played 90 minutes for Germany, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Iceland. Goals from Leon Goretzka and Kai Havertz helped the 2014 World Cup winners race to a two goal lead in the opening seven minutes. Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan then made it 3-0 in the second half with an impressive strike from long-range.
Can, who has been used as a centre-back and right-back this season, played at left-back for Germany on Thursday.
Thomas Delaney and Denmark began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Israel. Goals from Martin Braithwaite and Jonas Wind gave the Danes the victory. Delaney spent 88 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Christian Nørgaard.
Manuel Akanji played 90 minutes as Switzerland earned a 3-1 win over Bulgaria. Switzerland made an excellent start and took a 3-0 lead after just 13 minutes, thanks to goals from Breel Embolo, Haris Seferovic and Steven Zuber. Bulgaria took advantage of some sloppy defending from Switzerland to make it 3-1 early in the second half, but they weren’t able to claw their way back into the game.
Gio Reyna was also in action on Thursday, as he helped the United States beat Jamaica 4-1 in an international friendly. Sergino Dest, Brenden Aaronson and Sebastian Lletget (x2) were on target for the USMNT. Reyna was subbed off in the 68th minute.
