Borussia Dortmund internationals: Gio Reyna scores as United States defeat Northern Ireland
Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Gio Reyna was on target as the United States men’s national team enjoyed a 2-1 win over Northern Ireland in Belfast on Sunday.
Reyna was named in the USMNT starting XI as they looked to wrap up the international break with a win. And the 18 year old opened the scoring for his country with a deflected effort from the edge of the box. He let fly from 22 yards out, and the shot caught a deflection off a Northern Ireland defender, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
It was Reyna’s second goal in just his fourth appearance for the United States. And it was a much needed one as well. The Borussia Dortmund youngster has been struggling to find his form in recent weeks. So hopefully the goal will give him such much needed confidence.
Former Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic made it 2-0 for the United States in the second half, before Niall McGinn halved the deficit late on with a stunning effort.
England continued their impressive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Albania. Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham was an unused substitute, as goals from Harry Kane and Mason Mount either side of half-time helped Gareth Southgate’s side earn a straightforward win.
Gio Reyna will now return to Dortmund to start preparing for the big games that await the Black and Yellows in April. While Jude Bellingham and England still have one more game to come next week. The Three Lions will go up against Poland on Wednesday.
